A standby set only reports honestly under load. These are the findings that turn up on a first visit — usually months before anyone would have discovered them the hard way.
The exercise cycle fails, or never runs at all
A controller alarm nobody clears is a generator you don't have. Most of what we find on a first visit is a battery, a charger, or a block heater — cheap items that quietly disable the whole set.
It started during the outage but wouldn't carry the load
Starting is not the same as running. A set that trips on step load is either undersized for what the building has become or overdue for a load-bank test.
The transfer switch never transferred
The generator ran fine at the pad and the building stayed dark. ATS controls and contactors are their own maintenance item, and they fail independently of the engine.
Diesel that has been in the tank for years
Fuel degrades, water condenses, and microbial growth plugs filters at exactly the wrong moment. Polishing and tank service is the difference between fuel and ballast.
No documented monthly test
NFPA 110 puts emergency systems on a monthly exercise with records to match. When the fire marshal or your carrier asks, the logbook is the whole conversation.
An occupancy change put new loads on the emergency system
A build-out, a new tenant, or a use change moves egress lighting, a fire pump, or medical equipment onto the emergency branch — and the set that was right before may not be right now.

Before sizing, we calculate your actual connected load, demand factor, and inrush requirements. Avoids the over- or under-sizing that kills a generator budget.
NEC Article 702 standby and Article 700 life-safety system calculations. Transfer switch selected for your load type — service entrance, load-side, or critical-branch.
Natural gas, diesel, or propane. Generator pad, fuel-day tank sizing, underground storage coordination, and fuel-polishing systems for diesel sites.
Generator, ATS, and life-safety branch wiring. Load-bank test at commissioning. Final commissioning report with transfer times and voltage/frequency readings.
12-point annual inspection, oil and filter change, coolant test, battery replacement schedule, load-bank test, and written report after every visit.
